Medical Command and EMS Operations Course

Course Description: This course is intended for pre-hospital care providers who may be called on to respond to a mass casualty incident when large numbers of victims are injured or exposed to a natural or man made disaster. The Incident Command System (ICS), including the use of the Medical Branch/Medical Group function, will be followed to better prepare trainees how to respond with maximum effectiveness while maintaining situational awareness when establishing “Medical Command” at a mass casualty event involving multiple agencies. Participants will leave with all course materials including Jane’s Mass Casualty Handbook: Pre-Hospital Emergency Preparedness and Response.

Course Objectives:
  • Perform simulated trauma triage, treatment, and transport duties
  • Identify the Medical Command resources needed for a MCI response
  • Recognize the ICS forms needed to develop an Incident Action Plan (IAP)
  • Describe the role of the Medical Branch Director in the ICS system
  • Describe the individual responsibilities of the triage, treatment, and transport groups within the ICS system
  • Recognize the importance of situational awareness at a MCI
  • Recognize the staffing requirements for the triage, treatment, transport and extrication units at mass casualty incidents
  • Identify the three major incident categories of mass casualty events and the recommended staffing levels for the treatment group
