The origins and causes of foodborne disease outbreaks and food recalls are diverse. As the food production system becomes more complex, food is increasingly transported across both state and international borders. This places greater stress on the regulatory framework responsible for ensuring that food is safe for consumption. In recent years these issues and challenges have been highlighted by numerous highly publicized foodborne disease outbreaks and food recalls. The goal of this conference is to provide participants with the ability to learn about the food safety activities of both state and federal agencies. Participants will have an opportunity to communicate with representatives from other agencies and disciplines. This event will ultimately work to improve the efficacy and effectiveness of the response to outbreaks of foodborne disease and other threats to the food supply in Alabama and throughout the country.
At the conclusion of this conference participants will be able to:
  • Describe state and federal regulations that relate to the production, distribution and sale of food
  • Describe the protocols for responding to outbreaks of foodborne disease
  • List the agencies responsible for ensuring the safety of foods in the United States and describe their roles
  • Describe the resources available in Alabama for responding to outbreaks of foodborne disease
  • Discuss recent outbreaks of foodborne disease, the causes of, and the response to those outbreaks
  • Understand surveillance and reporting infrastructure as it relates to food safety in the United States
